Maybe they have an internal timer which has them self-destruct out of warranty. We should ask the guys at Dick Smith whether, when we extend the warranty, they have to dial the timer back 🙂

But I must say that, anecdotally, of all the people around me that owned them, and there are many, the vast majority have had issues with them crapping out within a couple of years (generally out of warranty heh).

It seems weird that you can’t just replace the damn battery on them – cheeky bastards!

True, the improvement in technology is such that the old and new iPods aren’t quite as substitutable as other durable goods – I guess with the new one this depends on how much you care about the video function 🙂

Indeed – after all, many people seem to be able to find the money for a new iPod each year fairly easily (not me though 😛 I still don’t have one)

Also maybe cellphones and iPod’s aren’t as durable as other goods – after a year or two they may just stop anyway 😉

Indeed – that is definitely the way I would read it.
