The Mariel boatlift study showed that wages in low paid jobs in Miami stayed constant for all but Cubans. That suggests that the job market is segmented along racial and ethnic lines as well as national lines. A black worker apparently isn’t a substitute for a hispanic worker or a Cuban worker.

Not only do the GE effects of immigration appear to be far better than anti-immigration campaigners suggest, but the lines of prejudice within countries also run deep and have a significant effect on the labour market.
