By this stage they are used to being large companies. Where-as NZ and Greece are small countries, and until recently trade with neighbors was expensive due to currency issues, thus we both have a tendency to stay local/small.

Absolutely. That is why it’s so important to focus on some sort of welfare measure rather than growth when you define a problem: you could easily lift growth while making people worse off.
