Most certainly. And the flipside is true – when someone makes a lifestyle choice to “eat healthy” they will tend to knock out every instance of eating certain foods, even when there were occasions where consuming that food would be “optimal”.

A big part of thinking about commitment and unconscious choice is being honest to ourselves about the choices we make. I am not certain that a tax is the right sort of device to deal with this type of choice related issue – which is why it is always important we are very clear about causes and the way policy fits into them 🙂

I tend to feel the problem with food is that its too hard to know these days what we are often eating, what its effect will be – and, if you want to eat better, how to. And the ill-effects of poor diet tend to accumulate very slowly so its pretty easy to give way to temptation for many people, in the belief that one more mouthful wont make a difference.
